hipposOkavango River

After breakfast, we went on the river cruise that Judith had signed us up for. Several other tourists had signed up as well. It was a slow, peaceful cruise up and down the Okavango River. We saw many hippos, crocodiles, and birds. Fish eagles, kingfishers, Egyptian geese, and so much more. A few elephants in the distance. A family from a local tribe was watering their herd of cattle and washing clothes on the bank. Lucas, our guide, told us how they make a detergent powder from the inside of an indigenous tree.

crocodileOn the way back, Lucas told us a long folk tale about a dog and a goat and a crocodile, and even though I couldn't follow it all with his thick accent, it was delightful to listen to him tell the story. He also told us about another boat driver on the river who was arrogant and always drove too fast, scaring the hippos. Until one day, a hippo took a large bite out of this boat, and Lucas had to come to his rescue. The driver promised he had learned his lesson, but Lucas still sees him driving too fast on the river.
