New York, New York

Wall Street

Wall Street is named for a wall erected in 1653 to defend New Amsterdam from Native Americans. After the English defeated the Dutch, New Amsterdam was renamed New York, and in 1699, the crumbling wall was torn down. Stones from the wall were used
in the foundation of City Hall.

Now Wall Street is home to the New York Stock Exchange and to the Federal Hall, where George Washington first took the
oath of office.
